Why your AI agent needs a killswitch (and how to add one in 5 minutes)
Autonomous AI agents can loop, burn budget, or call the wrong API at 3am. A killswitch is the single most important safety control you can add — and it takes minutes.
The 3am problem
Autonomous AI agents do not sleep. When something goes wrong — an infinite loop, a runaway task, a misclassified instruction — the agent keeps running until you wake up. By breakfast you have burned through your API budget, hammered an external service, or made a mess in production.
Every autonomous agent in production needs a **killswitch**: a single endpoint you can hit from any device to stop it cold.
What a proper killswitch does
1. **Halts new actions immediately** — no new LLM calls, no new tool invocations
2. **Cools down before allowing revival** — prevents flapping (kill → revive → kill again)
3. **Logs the kill reason** — for postmortem and audit
4. **Returns proper status codes** — `423 Locked` per RFC 7807, not a generic `500`
Add one in 5 minutes with AgentSafety
# Kill an agent
curl -X POST https://agentsafety.p.rapidapi.com/kill \
-H "X-RapidAPI-Key: YOUR_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"agent_id":"my-agent-prod","reason":"runaway loop detected"}'
# Check status before each action
curl -X GET "https://agentsafety.p.rapidapi.com/status?agent_id=my-agent-prod" \
-H "X-RapidAPI-Key: YOUR_KEY"
# Revive after the cooldown
curl -X POST https://agentsafety.p.rapidapi.com/revive \
-H "X-RapidAPI-Key: YOUR_KEY" \
-d '{"agent_id":"my-agent-prod"}'
Wire the status check into your agent loop:
const status = await fetch(`https://agentsafety.p.rapidapi.com/status?agent_id=${id}`, {
headers: { 'X-RapidAPI-Key': process.env.RAPIDAPI_KEY }
}).then(r => r.json());
if (status.state === 'killed') {
console.log('Agent halted:', status.reason);
return; // skip this iteration
}
That is the whole pattern. Three endpoints. One status check per loop iteration.
Bonus: sleep schedules
AgentSafety also supports timezone-aware sleep windows. Tell your agent to be silent between 23:00 and 07:00 in Europe/Stockholm and it will respect that without you writing the cron logic.
{
"agent_id": "my-agent-prod",
"sleep_hours": [23, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6],
"timezone": "Europe/Stockholm"
}
Why this matters now
LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, and custom agent stacks are landing in production. Most teams ship them without a remote off-switch. The first incident teaches everyone the same lesson — add the killswitch first, not after.
